What Is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is an advanced finishing process in which finely ground particles of pigment and resin are electrostatically charged and sprayed onto a metal surface. The charged powder particles adhere to the grounded metal workpiece, which is then heated in a curing oven where the powder melts, flows, and chemically cross-links into a durable, uniform polymer film.

Unlike liquid paint — which relies on solvents to keep the binder and pigment in a liquid suspension — powder coating is applied as a dry powder and contains no solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This makes it not only an environmentally superior choice but also a technically superior one: the cured powder film is typically 2-3 times thicker and significantly harder than a conventional liquid paint finish.

In our automated powder coating booths, overspray powder that does not adhere to the workpiece is collected, filtered, and returned to the feed system. Our powder recovery rate exceeds 95%, meaning almost no material goes to waste — a stark contrast to liquid paint where overspray is lost and becomes hazardous waste.

Superior Scratch Resistance

The thermosetting polyester and epoxy-polyester powders we use cure into a cross-linked polymer film with a hardness of 2H-3H (pencil hardness scale). This creates a finish that resists scratching, chipping, and impact far better than liquid paint — essential for high-traffic office environments where furniture faces daily wear.

UV-Stable & Fade-Resistant

Our exterior-grade polyester powders contain UV stabilisers that prevent colour fading and gloss degradation, even in sun-exposed areas near windows. Uniform, Consistent Finish

Electrostatic application ensures every surface — including edges, corners, and hard-to-reach recesses — receives an even coating thickness of 60-80 microns. There are no drips, sags, or thin spots. Every part from a production batch of 1,000 is visually and dimensionally identical.

Chemical & Corrosion Resistant

The cured powder film forms a continuous barrier that resists moisture, cleaning chemicals, and mild acids. Our phosphate pre-treatment further enhances corrosion resistance, achieving over 500 hours in neutral salt spray testing (ASTM B117) — suitable even for coastal and high-humidity environments.

3-Stage Pre-Treatment

Metal components pass through a tunnel system: (1) alkaline degreasing removes oils and contaminants at 60°C, (2) fresh water rinsing removes residual chemicals, (3) zinc phosphate conversion coating creates a micro-crystalline layer that bonds the powder to the metal and provides corrosion resistance. Every bath is monitored for concentration, temperature, and pH.

Drying & Cooling

Pre-treated parts pass through a gas-fired drying oven at 120°C to remove all moisture before powder application. Parts then cool to ambient temperature. Moisture trapped under powder causes blistering during curing, so this step is critical to finish quality.

Electrostatic Powder Application

Parts are conveyed into our automated coating booth where corona-charged spray guns apply electrostatically charged powder particles. The charge causes powder to wrap around edges and into recesses — a phenomenon called electrostatic wrap. We use dual-colour quick-change booths, allowing colour switches in under 15 minutes with zero cross-contamination risk.

Curing Oven

Coated parts enter a gas catalytic infrared curing oven at 180-200°C for 15-20 minutes. The powder melts, flows out, and chemically cross-links into a continuous polymer film. Our oven uses precise zone-based temperature control (±2°C) to ensure complete cure without over-baking, which can cause yellowing or gloss variation.

Quality Inspection

Every batch undergoes coating thickness measurement (60-80μm target), cross-hatch adhesion testing (ASTM D3359, 5B rating required), gloss measurement (60° gloss meter, within ±5 units of standard), colour verification under D65 lighting against the RAL master, and visual inspection for surface defects. Results are recorded in our QC database.
